The Cooling Power of Evaporating Water

Date: Monday, June 30 at 12:00-1:00 PM (Eastern Time)

Let’s talk about the cooling power of evaporating water, one of the great untold stories of climate change.

Step out of the shower or the swimming pool. You feel cold, because water is evaporating off your skin. When you exercise and perspire, you feel cool as water evaporates from your skin.

In the public discussion around climate change, we rarely hear about how evaporating water cools everything around it, or how ecosystems, such as forests, produce monumental amounts of evaporating water.

Let’s tell the untold story of how evaporating water governs our climate. Let’s talk about what the climate models miss about the power of water.

Your Climate Friendly Backyard

Date: Wednesday, July 2 at 7:00-8:30 PM

What is a climate friendly backyard? What does it look like? What does it do? In this free webinar, I give you an up-to-the-minute tour of my Kentucky pollinator garden and forested landscape, featuring both sun-loving wildflowers and shade. I’ll explain how these plants and trees, together with free wood chips, are busy absorbing not only carbon but water, with water, plants, trees and soil being the unsung heroes that positively impact our climate locally and beyond.

Regenerative Farming & Water. How regenerative agriculture will restore our waterways and our climate

Date: Thursday, July 3 at 3:00-4:30 PM (Eastern Time)

When a raindrop falls on farmland, what happens to it? It depends on the farmland. Does it fall on bare soil that has been tilled and treated endlessly with agrichemicals? Does it fall on land that has produced one crop, over and over? Or does it fall on a farm that has been busy regenerating the soil, the wildlife and the waterways?

Let’s explore the myriad ways in which farming interacts with water, for better or worse, and how we can make positive changes, starting with where we are.

The Worldwide Loss of Soil Moisture: What’s the big deal and what you can do about it

Date: Monday, July 7 at 12:00-1:30 PM

Researchers have reported that between 2000 and 2015, the soils of the world lost over 2,000 billion tons of freshwater.

All life on land depends on freshwater. Freshwater naturally resides in our soils. When out soils lose freshwater, then all life on land suffers. It’s good that scientists are reporting on this, but the media is not giving it the attention it deserves. And no one seems to understand how to fix the problem, i.e., by improving our soils, so they can hold more water, in our farms, our forests and our landscapes.

Reforestation has Cooled the Eastern US

Date: Wednesday, July 9 at 7:00-8:30

This June has brought sweltering heat to the Eastern United States. Believe it or not, this could be worse, but it could also be better. And trees can make a surprising difference in outdoor temperatures, especially in warm weather. This is not just speculation. And it’s not just common sense. A March, 2024 study showed that the Eastern United States is now 1-2 degrees celsius cooler due to the reforestation that has occurred in the region. We discuss the findings of the study and what they tell us about the importance of forests in a warming world.
